| Short answer List what’s going in, measure the largest item, then add 30 percent for walking space and future clutter. As a rule of thumb: 5×4 to 6×4 holds tools and a push mower, 8×8 holds garden equipment plus patio furniture, 8×10 holds all of that plus bikes and a ladder, and 10×12 gives you room to work inside. |
Ask ten shed owners what size storage shed do I need and nine will tell you they should have gone bigger. The tenth bought a 10×12 for a push mower. Both mistakes come from the same place: guessing at footprint instead of measuring contents. A shed isn’t a box you fill to the walls. It’s a room you walk into, which means aisle space, door swing and reach all eat into the number on the label. This walkthrough covers how to measure first, what genuinely fits at each size, and the two dimensions almost nobody checks until the mower won’t go through the door.
Measure before you shop
Three numbers decide everything. Get them on paper before you look at a single product page.
1. The footprint
Mark out the shed’s exterior dimensions on the ground with string or chalk, then walk around it. Leave 24 to 36 inches of clearance on every side you’ll need to access, and at least 18 inches at the back for airflow and maintenance. A shed pushed tight against a fence traps moisture and you can’t repair the panel you can’t reach.
2. The door swing
Double doors need room to open fully. Measure the swing arc in front of the shed and check nothing lives there: a planter, a downpipe, a slope. Sheds with sliding or barn style doors avoid this, though most resin and metal sheds use outward swinging doubles.
3. The clear opening
This is the one people miss. A riding mower needs a door opening wider than the mower plus a few inches on each side for the person steering it. Door openings run considerably narrower than the shed wall. Check the published opening rather than assuming. As an example, the 8×10 shed further down this page has a 60 inch wide by 72 inch high door opening.
Size tiers and what actually fits
Floor area tells you less than you’d think. Usable capacity depends on height and shelving. Cubic feet is the more honest number where a manufacturer publishes it.
Small: 5×4 and 6×4 feet
| Size | Floor area | Rough capacity | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 x 4 ft | 20 sq ft | Around 100 to 130 cu ft | Tools, push mower, sports gear |
| 6 x 4 ft | 24 sq ft | Around 139 cu ft on our graphite model | Tools plus bikes standing upright |
| 6 x 4.4 ft | 26 sq ft | Similar, with a little more depth | Garden gear with a narrow aisle |
What fits: a push mower, a strimmer, long handled tools hung on the wall, a wheelbarrow stood on its end, two adult bikes if you hang one, hose reels, fuel cans and a shelf of pots. What doesn’t: a riding mower, a workbench you can stand at, or anything that needs you to step fully inside and turn around.
- Fits down the side of most houses
- Usually falls under permit thresholds
- Assembly is a two person afternoon
Medium: 8×8 feet
| Size | Floor area | Rough capacity | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 x 8 ft | 64 sq ft | 427 cu ft on our resin model | Garden equipment, patio furniture, bikes |
| 8 x 6 ft | 48 sq ft | Around 320 cu ft | The step up from small, in a narrow yard |
This is where a shed stops being a cupboard. 427 cubic feet swallows a mower, a full set of garden tools, four stacked patio chairs, cushions in a box, bikes and a shelf run down one wall, with floor left to stand on. Most households find this size is the one they should have bought first.
- Wall shelving becomes practical, which doubles usable space
- Patio furniture overwinters here instead of under a tarp
- Still needs a properly level base, more than a small shed does
Large: 8×10 and 10×12 feet
| Size | Floor area | Rough capacity | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 x 10 ft | 80 sq ft | Interior 7 ft 9 in W x 9 ft 9 in D x 8 ft 4.5 in H on our model | Everything above plus ladders and long tools |
| 10 x 12 ft | 120 sq ft | Around 900 cu ft depending on height | Riding mower, workshop, motorcycle, generator |
At 8×10 you get true walk in storage with an aisle down the middle and shelving on both sides. Ladders and long handled tools finally lie flat. At 10×12 the shed becomes a room: a bench along one wall, a snow blower parked at the end, bikes hung on hooks and space to actually work. That’s also the size where permits start to apply in many counties.
- Interior height matters here. Look for 8 feet or more if you want overhead storage
- Skylights or windows stop it feeling like a cave
- Assembly can need three to five people on metal models
Size by what you’re storing
Work backwards from contents. This table is the fastest route to an answer.
| What you’re storing | Minimum size | Comfortable size |
|---|---|---|
| Hand tools and a hose | 5 x 4 ft | 6 x 4 ft |
| Push mower, strimmer, garden tools | 6 x 4 ft | 8 x 6 ft |
| The above plus 2 bikes | 8 x 6 ft | 8 x 8 ft |
| The above plus patio furniture for winter | 8 x 8 ft | 8 x 10 ft |
| Riding mower | 8 x 10 ft | 10 x 12 ft |
| Riding mower plus a workbench | 10 x 12 ft | 12 x 16 ft |
| Motorcycle or snow blower plus storage | 10 x 12 ft | 10 x 12 ft with a wide door |
| Pool equipment and chemicals | 6 x 4 ft ventilated | 8 x 6 ft ventilated |

5×4 FT Resin Outdoor Storage Shed with Floor is the small tier done properly. 12mm double layer resin panels with a 12mm resin floor and a PVC surface. Tools never sit on damp soil. It fits in a side return or against a boundary and still takes a push mower with the long handled tools hung up around it.
- Floor included rather than sold separately
- Small enough to avoid permit thresholds in most areas
Honest limitation: at 20 square feet this is storage, not a space you work in. Two people can reach in from the doorway. Nobody is standing inside it.
6 x 4.4 FT Gray Outdoor Large Resin Storage Shed adds depth without adding a lot of footprint. Double wall 12mm resin panels that are UV resistant, waterproof, corrosion proof and fade resistant, with a lockable door and a floor. Rated 4.50 out of 5 by early customers.
- The extra depth takes a wheelbarrow flat rather than on end
- Lockable door for equipment worth stealing
Honest limitation: only 5 customer ratings so far. There’s less feedback to lean on than on our older models. The gain over a 6×4 is real but modest.
Resin 8 x 8 Storage Shed with Lockable Doors is the size most people should start with. 427 cubic feet, a floor, waterproof construction and lockable doors. Rated 4.45 out of 5 across 21 ratings, which is the largest review base of the four.
- Shelving along one wall still leaves a clear aisle
- Takes a mower, garden tools, bikes and patio furniture together
Honest limitation: $1,650 is a serious spend. An 8 by 8 also needs a properly level base. Door alignment problems within a season are almost always a base problem rather than a shed problem.
Spacious 8×10 Ft Heavy Duty Resin Storage Shed is walk in storage. Exterior 8 ft 4.5 in wide by 10 ft 2.25 in deep by 8 ft 7 in high, interior 7 ft 9 in by 9 ft 9 in by 8 ft 4.5 in, with a 60 by 72 inch door opening, a reinforced floor, skylights and a padlock hasp on the double doors.
- Published interior dimensions, which makes planning shelving straightforward
- Skylights: you can see what you are doing without running power
Honest limitation: the padlock isn’t included. A 60 inch door opening is wide for garden gear yet still tight for some riding mowers. Measure your machine across the widest point before ordering.

Height, doors and access
Floor area gets all the attention. These three decide whether the shed works day to day.
- Interior height: under 7 feet and tall people stoop at the walls where the roof slopes. Over 8 feet and overhead storage becomes possible.
- Door opening: always check the published opening rather than the wall width. A 60 by 72 inch opening handles almost everything except wide riding mowers.
- Threshold: a raised lip stops water entering and stops a mower rolling in. A ramp solves it and needs about 3 feet of run.
- Reach: anything deeper than about 8 feet needs an aisle, or the back third becomes a place things go to be forgotten.
Base, permits and placement
The shed is the easy part. What it stands on decides how long it lasts.
- Build a level base: compacted gravel at least 4 inches deep, or a concrete slab. Level in both directions, checked with a long spirit level.
- Anchor it. Soil and gravel installations often need auger anchors 30 to 36 inches long. Wind moves an empty shed surprisingly easily.
- Check setbacks. Most counties set a minimum distance from boundaries and many exempt sheds under a certain floor area from permits entirely.
- Leave airflow. At least 18 inches at the back, more if you’re in a damp climate.
- Think about the route. A shed at the bottom of a long garden means wheeling the mower further than you expect, every single week.
Five sizing mistakes
1. Measuring the contents flat on the floor
Items stack and hang. A shed’s usable volume is roughly floor area times wall height, minus an aisle. Plan shelving at the same time as size and the tier below is often enough.
2. Forgetting seasonal swaps
Patio cushions in winter, a snow blower in summer. A shed sized for peak load in one season is undersized for the other.
3. Buying for today’s contents
Sheds fill. Add 30 percent to whatever your list says and you’ll be about right in three years.
4. Ignoring the door opening
Every year somebody builds a shed a riding mower can’t enter. The wall is wide enough. The doorway isn’t.
5. Skipping the base to afford a bigger shed
A large shed on soft ground racks out of square and the doors stop closing. Buy the smaller unit and build the base properly. That combination lasts longer.
Key takeaways
- Measure contents, then add 30 percent. That number picks the tier.
- 5×4 to 6×4 for tools and a push mower. 8×8 for a household. 8×10 and up for walk in space.
- Cubic feet and interior height matter more than floor area once shelving is involved.
- Check the door opening against your widest machine before ordering.
- A level base and anchors are not optional at any size.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the most common storage shed sizes?
Small sheds cluster around 5×4, 6×4 and 8×6 feet. Mid range sits at 8×8 and 8×10. Large domestic units run 10×12 and up. The jump most buyers regret skipping is from 6×4 to 8×8, because that’s where a shed goes from holding tools to holding a household’s outdoor equipment.
Is a 6×4 shed big enough?
For hand tools, a push mower, a strimmer and a couple of bikes, yes, provided you hang things on the walls. It isn’t big enough to stand inside and work. Patio furniture will not fit alongside garden equipment. Treat 6×4 as reach in storage rather than a room you enter.
What can fit in an 8×8 shed?
Around 427 cubic feet, which in practice means a mower, a full set of garden tools, four stacked patio chairs, a cushion box, two bikes and a shelf run down one wall, with floor space left to stand on. It’s the size most households settle on once they’ve outgrown a small unit.
Do I need a permit for a storage shed?
It depends on floor area, height and distance from your boundary. The rules are set locally rather than nationally. Many places exempt sheds under a set floor area and require a permit beyond it. Check with your local building department before ordering, since the exemption usually keys off square footage.
How much clearance does a shed need around it?
Leave 24 to 36 inches on any side you need to walk down and at least 18 inches at the back for airflow and future repairs. Doors need their full swing arc kept clear. A shed pressed against a fence traps moisture against the panel and you cannot reach the side that needs attention.
What size shed fits a riding mower?
Start at 8×10 feet and be comfortable at 10×12. The deciding number is the door opening rather than the floor, since the mower has to pass through with the operator steering. Measure the machine at its widest point, add several inches each side, and compare that against the published door opening.
Does a shed need a floor?
Yes, unless it’s going onto a concrete slab. A included floor keeps contents off damp ground and gives the structure a rigid base, which keeps the walls square. Sheds sold without a floor need either a slab or a timber deck built first. That cost belongs in your budget from the start.
How tall should a storage shed be?
Interior height under 7 feet leaves tall people stooping at the walls where the roof slopes. Around 8 feet or more opens up overhead storage and shelving above head height. Check the interior figure rather than the exterior one, because roof structure and the base can account for several inches.
Can you put shelving in a resin shed?
Yes, though the method differs from wood. Resin walls aren’t structural in the way studs are. Heavy shelving is usually free standing on the floor rather than screwed to the wall, or it bolts to the manufacturer’s own reinforcement points. Check the model’s guidance before drilling anything.
Is it cheaper to buy one big shed or two small ones?
One larger shed, almost always. Cost per square foot falls as footprint grows and you only build one base, one set of anchors and one door. Two small sheds also take up more total yard space once you allow the required clearance around each of them.
